Chianche

A tiny fiefdom annexed to Montefusco in medieval age, Chianche is today a commune in the Campania region with about 500 inhabitants, which sits on a hill overlooking the Sabato valley, in a magnificent panorama. Its ancient name is “plance” (plank) and seems to have a double interpretation: the stones of the historic Via Appia called plancae or, alternatively, the name of one of its founders and gentlemen, the Roman Munazio Plancus. The Norman castle with its striking cylindrical towers stands as evidence of Chianche’s historic past. For the peculiarities of its sandy soil and clay with limestone substrate, this village has been included in the area of origin of Campanian best-known indigenous white, the Greco di Τufo. The first vine was planted in 1970 in the nearby Chianchetelle.
