Preturo Irpino

Nestled on a rock in the valley of the Sabato River, 500m above sea level, Petruro Ipino is one of the smallest municipalities in Campania with about 340 inhabitants. Its name may derive from the Latin word Praetorium meaning, "the palace of the magistrate". However, according to other sources, it is named after the latin word petra (rock) because of its geographical location. In 1240 it was annexed to the possessions of Montefusco and then became a medieval fiefdom owned by several families. Its historic centre has been kept almost intact with stone streets, its eighteenth-century church and old houses. Surrounded by woods and green plots, thanks to its hillside location, the specific exposure to the sun and the characteristics of the soil - calcareous, alternating with areas of sandy-clay, this is one of the eight esteemed territories selected for the production of the Greco di Tufo DOCG.
