Torre Le Nocelle

Torre le Nocelle is a tiny, pretty village in the province of Avellino of about 1,350 inhabitants. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, on a sloping hill overlooking the valley of the Calore River, this village seems to have taken its name from Latin Turris Nocellarium ( hazelnut tower) as, according to the legend, in times of war, hazelnuts were the only sustenance for its inhabitants. Probably dating from pre-Roman and Roman times (witness, the remains of an aqueduct), it was a watchtower for Montesfusco in Medieval times. The earliest official documentation with its name was in the dependency list of the Monastery Montevergine in 1710. Thanks to its fertile territory, characterized by the presence of clays, limestone and Campanian ignimbrite, it is one of the seventeen esteemed areas selected for the production of Taurasi DOCG
